What police revised
Police in Bend, Oregon, have updated their account of the shooting at Silver Rail Elementary School. They now say an additional student and an additional adult were inside the classroom and escaped without injury, according to Oregon Public Broadcasting.
At a press conference on Oct. 16, police had said the room held three adults and four students. Sheila Miller, a Bend Police spokesperson, told OPB by phone on Monday that the corrected count is five children and four staff members. She said the suspect is not included in those figures.
Miller said both of the newly disclosed people got out of the room. She could not say how they managed to do so, according to OPB.
The known toll
The new information does not change the casualty figures police have given. Three students and one teacher were killed, OPB reported. A second teacher and another student were injured.
Taken with the revised headcount, that means some of the people in the classroom were hurt or killed and others got away. Police have not publicly described how events unfolded inside the room.
Officials said on Friday that the attacker went only to the special needs classroom. A bystander then shot and killed him, according to the account OPB relayed.
The suspect's school history
Police have identified the alleged shooter as 16-year-old Griffin John II. Officials revealed last week that he had once been a special needs student at Silver Rail. His motive for allegedly targeting a special needs classroom at his former school has not been established.
More detail about his time in local schools came out Monday. Scott Maben, a spokesman for Bend-La Pine Schools, told OPB that John was last enrolled in the district in November 2025.
Maben said John had attended Elk Meadow Elementary, Pilot Butte Middle School and the former Bend Tech Academy, in addition to Silver Rail. OPB added an editor's note to its report to clarify that John was a former student at Silver Rail, not a current one.
A community still processing the attack
A makeshift memorial has formed outside the school. OPB's photo caption from Oct. 16 describes heart-shaped balloons floating among police tape at the site.
Other outlets have also covered the aftermath. Headlines from KGW describe a Bend community reeling as details emerge about victims and survivors. A CNN headline raises the question of whether the suspect's parents could face charges. The Washington Post published an opinion piece on how adults should talk with children after school shootings. The source material does not say whether any charges are being considered.
Several basic questions remain unanswered, including the motive and how the two people newly counted in the classroom escaped. Police and school officials have not said when they expect to release more information.
