Former DHS Secretary Kristi Noem is no longer serving as special envoy for the Shield of the Americas initiative but remains a senior advisor at the State Department.

Kristi Noem's designation as the Trump administration's special envoy for the Shield of the Americas expired last month, a State Department official confirmed Thursday. Noem, who previously served as Homeland Security Secretary, remains involved in the administration's Western Hemisphere security efforts.

She now serves as a senior advisor to Deputy Secretary Landau while continuing work on the Shield of the Americas portfolio. The coalition, established by the Trump administration earlier this year, includes the United States and several Caribbean and Latin American countries focused on economic cooperation, anti-cartel enforcement, and regional security.

Noem was appointed to the envoy role in March following her removal as homeland security secretary. Her public activities in the position included meetings with Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa in March and September, and participation in Shield of the Americas gatherings at the United Nations General Assembly.

Why it matters
  • 1.The shift reflects changes in staffing and diplomatic priorities within the Trump administration's regional engagement strategy.
