What happened at Silver Rail Elementary
A 16-year-old gunman attacked Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon, on Thursday. Police say a bystander shot and killed him at the school. Two law enforcement sources briefed on the investigation told CBS News that the attacker was John Griffin.
Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz said at a news conference Thursday night that the children killed were ages 5, 8 and 11. Two other people, a 7-year-old child and a 54-year-old teacher, were hospitalized with critical injuries. CBS News' opening line also refers to a teacher among the dead, while a later passage describes a teacher as critically injured. The report does not reconcile the two.
Krantz said the gunman got into the building by "shooting at locked doors." Police said officers reached the school within minutes of the 911 calls and found the shooter dead, along with other victims, inside.
The weapon and the investigation
According to CBS News, law enforcement sources said the shotgun used in the attack had been purchased by the suspect's mother. Police have not given a motive. The suspect lived in Bend, but authorities have not said whether he had any connection to the school.
The sources said investigators are going through his computer, phone, social media accounts, search history and other online activity. One line of inquiry is whether he was fixated on violence, including earlier mass shootings. The sources stressed that the investigation is in its preliminary stages.
Because these details come from unnamed sources and the inquiry is at an early point, the picture could change as investigators learn more.
The bystander and the victims
Bend police said the bystander pursued the shooter, confronted him and shot him dead. On Friday, the man's family identified him as Kaylub Giamanco, a Bend resident whose two daughters attend Silver Rail Elementary.
The family said in a statement: "He is not seeking recognition, but instead wishes to express his gratitude to the first responders, school personnel, and community for the outpouring of love and support."
The 5-year-old victim has been identified as Rhoam Summer, according to fundraisers and a social media post from his father. The source material does not name the other victims.
What remains unclear
Several basic questions are still open. Police have not publicly explained why the teenager targeted the school or whether he knew anyone there. The reporting also does not say how he came to have the shotgun his mother purchased, or what role, if any, that purchase will play in the case.
Investigators are expected to keep working through the teenager's digital records, which the sources described as a central part of the effort. Police have so far shared limited information, and the community of Bend is grieving while the inquiry continues.
