Variety has selected skilled craftspeople from 2026 films and shows to honor at the SCAD Savannah Film Festival, continuing a tradition where past honorees have earned Oscar nominations.

Variety has announced its 2026 Artisans to Watch list, recognizing craftspeople who contributed to major films and television productions released that year. The honorees will be celebrated at the SCAD Savannah Film Festival running October 24-31. Past years' recipients have frequently advanced to Oscar nominations, with last year's honorees from "Sinners," "KPop Demon Hunters," and "One Battle After Another" all winning Academy Awards.

Among the recognized artisans is Anne Jimkes, supervising sound editor for "The Mosquito Bowl," who meticulously researched World War II Pacific Theater weaponry to ensure authenticity. Jimkes prioritized soldier sounds and physical reactions, employing what she calls a "parade of sound" technique to process multiple audio elements while keeping characters' humanity central to the narrative.

Animation supervisor Aulo Licinio developed physical language for Rocky, the emotionless alien creature in "Project Hail Mary," drawing inspiration from silent film performers like Charlie Chaplin. Art director Landon Lott designed a Norwegian ice hotel set for "Pluribus," studying authentic Scandinavian ice hotels while balancing artistic vision with practical stage construction requirements.

Why it matters
  • 1.The recognition highlights the technical expertise behind major film and television productions, and the list has proven predictive of future industry success and major award recognition.
