Police determined that fireworks, not gunfire, caused the active threat alert at Miami University's McGuffey Hall on Thursday.

Miami University issued an active threat alert Thursday afternoon following reports of gunfire near McGuffey Hall. The alert was posted to social media at 2:11 p.m., prompting officers to respond and search the building.

Police completed their investigation and determined all was clear by 2:37 p.m. The Butler County Sheriff's Office confirmed to WLWT that fireworks, not actual gunshots, had been discharged inside the building.

McGuffey Hall houses Miami University's College of Education, Health and Society. The university advised people to remain vigilant while the situation was being assessed.

Why it matters
  • 1.Campus safety alerts require rapid response to protect students and staff, though false alarms highlight challenges in distinguishing genuine threats from other incidents.
