DC Studios co-chief Peter Safran says a second season renewal depends on whether writers develop a sequel worthy of the first season's success.

HBO's 'Lanterns' has not yet received a second season renewal, but one may be forthcoming based on developments in the writers' room, according to DC Studios co-chief Peter Safran. He indicated that an announcement regarding the show's future should arrive before the end of the year.

Safran emphasized that Season 2 would need to match the quality of the first season, which was both commercially and critically successful. 'If we're able to come up with what we believe to be a worthy successor to a beloved and great first season, that's what's going to dictate whether there's a second season,' he said.

The eight-episode season finale aired on October 4, resolving the mystery of Hal Jordan's death and revealing the second Manhunter's identity. Episode seven reached 7 million viewers in the U.S. in its first three days, while previous episodes averaged over 12 million domestic viewers and nearly 19 million globally.
