Director Lim Hayeon's feature follows a young woman through two versions of the same day, examining how fate and choice shape a life.
Lim Hayeon's debut feature 'Beach Fictions' premiered in competition at the Busan Film Festival, following protagonist Tae-ju through two consecutive versions of a single day that diverge based on different encounters and choices. The film examines themes of fatalism, self-determination, and imagination as various voices—including a novelist character and a psychic—influence the direction of events.
After a difficult evening in Seoul where Tae-ju's social life unravels, she travels to a coastal guesthouse where she meets a charismatic street magician named Manhyuk. In the film's two-part structure, subtle shifts in circumstances lead to notably different romantic outcomes, with variables including a water-damaged phone, social interactions, and psychic consultation.
