What happened in Birmingham
A shooting near Legion Field in Birmingham, Alabama, on Saturday left one person dead and eight others injured, police said, according to CBS News. It happened after the annual Magic City Classic football game had ended.
Police Chief Michael Pickett said the crowd had largely cleared out of the stadium grounds by the time gunfire broke out. He said the shooting took place close by, in an area along Graymont Avenue where vendors had set up.
Pickett called the violence a "completely senseless act of violence" and said he was "very grateful that more people weren't injured."
What police are saying about the investigation
Authorities have not explained what led to the gunfire. Police spokesperson De'Rell Freeman said one person was detained and taken to police headquarters for questioning. He added that "multiple weapons" had been found and secured.
Pickett said the problem reaches beyond his city. "This is something that we not only just see here in Birmingham, but we see it all over the nation," he said. "And it's important that we, as a community, address this issue."
The game and its history
The Magic City Classic pits Alabama State against Alabama A&M. Both are historically Black universities, and their yearly meeting has gone on for more than a century. CBS News reported that nearly 70,000 fans came to this year's game, which Alabama A&M won 31-28.
The event draws some of the biggest crowds in the country among teams in its college football division. The tradition is so well established that Alabama State coach Eddie Robinson Jr., a former NFL linebacker and an alumnus of the school, has proposed starting a Hall of Fame for the game.
Other shootings over the weekend
CBS News described the Birmingham shooting as one of several violent incidents nationwide during Halloween weekend. In Dallas, three shootings occurred within minutes of one another in the downtown Deep Ellum neighborhood. Four people were killed and five were wounded, CBS News Texas reported.
In Newark, Delaware, six people were shot shortly after 11:10 p.m. Saturday near the University of Delaware campus, Newark police Lt. Greg D'Elia said. All six were taken to hospitals. Video shared on social media showed people running from the scene, and a section of Main Street was closed for several hours.
Early Sunday in Bloomington, Illinois, near Illinois Wesleyan University, a 19-year-old woman was killed and another woman was in critical condition. Six other people had injuries that were not life-threatening. A statement from the city's police department and the McLean County Coroner's Office did not make clear whether those six had been shot. Bloomington is about 135 miles southwest of Chicago.
Also early Sunday, six people were taken to hospitals with gunshot wounds in Fayetteville, Arkansas. Police said in a news release that no arrests had been made and that a preliminary investigation pointed to an altercation before the shooting.
On Friday, two people were killed in separate shootings at Spirit Halloween stores, one in California and one in Michigan, according to CBS News.
What remains unknown
The reporting leaves several questions open. Police in Birmingham have not said what set off the shooting, whether the person held for questioning is considered responsible, or how the weapons that were recovered relate to the attack. CBS News did not report the identities or conditions of the victims.
