What happened in Fairfield
Gunfire broke out late Friday inside a Spirit Halloween store at the Solano Town Center in Fairfield, California, according to a statement from the Fairfield Police Department. The seasonal retailer sells costumes and decorations, and the shooting happened as Halloween was about to arrive.
Police said seven people were hit by gunfire. One of them died. The other six were taken to hospitals for treatment, and at least three were in critical condition, according to the department's statement, which CBS News cited in its reporting.
Fairfield is roughly 37 miles northeast of Sacramento.
What police have said so far
In an update on Saturday, the department said preliminary information indicates the shooting was a targeted incident involving one suspect who was inside the store. Police have not said who the intended target was, and they are not releasing further details while the investigation continues.
Officers have also not named the person who was killed. Police said they are still working to establish that person's identity.
An earlier statement, posted around midnight early Saturday, said detectives were interviewing witnesses in an effort to identify a suspect. It described the location as an ongoing scene to be processed. "This is still a very active crime scene. Detectives are speaking with witnesses and diligently working to identify the suspect responsible for this horrific shooting," the department said in that statement.
A separate shooting in Michigan
CBS News also noted a different shooting at a Spirit Halloween store, this one in Madison Heights, Michigan. Police there reported that the incident happened late Friday afternoon and involved two males, both 21 years old.
CBS News Detroit reported that one of them died of his injuries. Police said the alleged shooter is in the hospital. Nothing in the material provided links the Michigan shooting to the one in California, and the two were reported by separate police agencies.
What remains unknown
Several basic questions in Fairfield remain unanswered. Police have not described a suspect, said whether anyone is in custody, or explained why the store was targeted. They have also not said what condition the injured victims are in beyond the three who are critical.
Detectives are continuing to interview witnesses, and the department has said it will not share additional information for now. Residents and shoppers who were at the mall or who have information are the kind of sources investigators typically rely on in such cases, though the police statements provided here do not include a public appeal.
Further updates are expected from the Fairfield Police Department as the identity of the victim who died is confirmed and the search for the suspect moves forward.
