What happened near the stadium
Twelve people were injured in a shooting near Florida A&M University's Bragg Memorial Stadium on Saturday, according to NBC News. The stadium had hosted the school's homecoming football game earlier that evening.
The Tallahassee Police Department said in a statement that 11 of the 12 people were shot. The twelfth was hurt while running from the scene, Chief Lawrence Revell said at a press conference early Sunday. Three victims had serious injuries, including one minor in serious condition. The others were reported to be in stable condition.
The violence began at about 8 p.m. at an intersection next to the stadium, police said. Earlier in the evening, Florida A&M's Rattlers had hosted the Arkansas-Pine Bluff Golden Lions in the historically Black university's annual homecoming game.
Who was hurt and what police know
Revell said six of the injured are under 18 and the youngest is 11. He did not identify any of the victims, but said one is believed to be a student at Florida A&M.
Describing the early findings, Revell said, "Our preliminary information shows that an altercation occurred between individuals." He called it "an isolated incident between two or three individuals." Police believe one shooter was involved, he said, though no arrests had been made and no one had been taken into custody.
"Our priority is to determine what happened and why it happened, and to bring the people that are responsible for this to justice," Revell said. He asked any witnesses to come forward.
The response on the ground
Revell praised the officers who responded, saying they ran without hesitation "into the middle of this, still not knowing where the shooters were, still not knowing how many victims we had." He said crowds made it hard to get through. "We had officers that were picking up victims and carrying them in their arms to transport victims because they couldn't get through the mass of people," he said.
After the shooting, Florida A&M posted a statement on X asking members of its campus community to stay away from the area. The university described the shooting as having happened "near campus," which it said was safe. "Our hearts are with the victims and everyone affected by tonight's incident on Perry Street," it said.
Alert at nearby Florida State
Florida State University, about a mile from Florida A&M, issued an emergency alert about the violence. It said it did not appear that anyone from its school community was involved.
"As a precaution, students, faculty and staff in the Tallahassee area are advised to remain indoors this evening and stay alert," the university said.
The investigation was ongoing, and police continued to ask witnesses to come forward. Police did not release further details on the victims or the suspected shooter in the information available.
