Arizona State University and head coach Greg Powers reached a mutual separation agreement nearly two months after sophomore Matthew Mayich collapsed during a workout in August.
Arizona State University announced Thursday that it has ended its employment relationship with hockey coach Greg Powers following the August 20 collapse of 21-year-old sophomore Matthew Mayich during a workout. Mayich suffered heatstroke and was placed on life support. The university has hired Dave Hakstol, formerly an assistant coach for the Colorado Avalanche, as the new head hockey coach.
Powers was placed on paid administrative leave in late September after Mayich's parents and teammates demanded the removal of staff involved in the workout. Seven teammates alleged in an anonymous letter that the workout lacked proper safety measures, including water breaks and emergency cold-water immersion equipment. They also claimed Mayich showed signs of distress before collapsing during the final exercise.
