What Morissette said on the podcast
Alanis Morissette said she is pansexual during an appearance on the November 3 episode of the "Handsome" podcast, according to Yahoo. The show is co-hosted by Tig Notaro, Fortune Feimster and Mae Martin. Morissette is 52.
The moment came near the end of the episode. Feimster told the singer, "I'm sorry for the men that hurt you, but I'm not sorry for the songs that came from it." She then asked, "Did it make you want to be a lesbian at any point?"
Morissette answered, "I'm pansexual, so, yeah." Notaro responded, "Wait, you're not really pansexual, are you?" Morissette joked about the timing of the disclosure, saying, "I like to leave it for the epilogue." Pansexual typically describes people who are attracted to people of all genders.
A career built on breakup songs
Morissette has become known for her songs about breakups, which was the subject of Feimster's question. Yahoo noted that she has talked about her romantic history in several interviews over the years.
In a 2016 conversation with Vogue, she said, "Dating—I don't want to give you the number." She added, "I dated a lot of people before my husband. For me, it's a numbers game."
Past relationships and her marriage
According to Yahoo, Morissette was previously linked to Dave Coulier, Dash Mihok and Ryan Reynolds. She and Reynolds were engaged from 2004 until 2007. Speaking to the Los Angeles Times about that split, she said, "I think it's the straw that breaks the camel's back." She described herself then as "a full-blown love addict" and said that for such a person, breakups are "debilitating."
She dated Tom Ballanco from 2007 until 2009. That year she began dating Mario "Souleye" Treadway, and the two married the following year. They have three children: Ever Imre Treadway, born in 2010, Onyx Solace Treadway, born in 2016, and Winter Mercy Treadway, born in 2019.
Speaking to People in 2020, Morissette said, "We're helping each other out." She described how relationships tend to move "from infatuation to power struggle," after which most people break up. She said she and Treadway were entering a third phase of helping each other heal and grow.
Her view on keeping romance alive
In the same People interview, Morissette said the secret to her relationship is "flirting." She described it as "dates, gifts and compliments."
She also said emotional recognition from her husband matters to her. When he says something like "Wow, you're really nurturing" or "really patient," she said, "that's like full-blown sexy time for me."
