The big-budget take on Homer’s 3,000-year-old epic, led by Matt Damon as the Greek king Odysseus, has generated $639.6 million worldwide, including $353.2 million at the international box office and $284.4 million domestically. It’s a staggering turnout for a sword-and-sandal adventure that’s nearly three hours long and rated R, underscoring the fact that Nolan is the most bankable director of his generation.

It’s the best second weekend hold for a movie that opened above $100 million, according to Universal, which backed the $250 million-budgeted film. “The Odyssey” has already surpassed the international haul of this spring’s hit “Project Hail Mary” ($340 million) and now ranks among the top five highest-grossing Hollywood releases of the year — and that’s before opening in major foreign markets including China, Japan and Korea.
Top-earning territories to date include the United Kingdom and Ireland with $46.3 million, France with $31.8 million, Italy with $28.8 million, Australia with $20.6 million and Germany with $20.4 million. Popular on Variety Imax has contributed an incredible $140 million of global ticket sales for “The Odyssey,” which is notable as the first feature shot entirely with Imax cameras. It’s the second-fastest title in the company’s history to surpass $100 million, following 2019’s behemoth “Avengers: Endgame,” with Nolan’s epic taking just 10 days to hit the mark.
In its second weekend of release, “The Odyssey” amassed $24 million internationally and $38 million worldwide in Imax, ranking as the company’s largest sophomore outing in history. Imax’s coveted 70mm screens — Nolan’s preferred format — accounted for $5.2 million over the weekend from just 41 screens across the world. The small-but-mighty 70mm footprint has generated $16.9 million to date, representing 12.1% of the total Imax box office.
Since there are so few of those screens across the globe, most of those showtimes are sold out into September. “Chris has crafted the type of masterwork that draws our biggest fans back to experience it two or three times — while introducing entirely new fans to Imax,” says Imax’s CEO Richard Gelfond. “We are only beginning to see the impact that will have on our brand and business.” In other global box office milestones, Disney and Pixar’s “Toy Story 5″ has surpassed $1 billion and stands as the highest-grossing movie of 2026 with $1.02 billion.
It’s the third release of the year, following “The Super Mario Galaxy Movie” ($1.001 billion) and “Michael” ($1.001 billion), to cross the coveted box office benchmark. “The Odyssey,” as well as next weekend’s “Spider-Man: Brand New Day,” are basically assured to join that elusive company.
