The latest feature from writer-director Wes Miller (“Black Heat,” “Call Her King”), “Wildcards” follows the trial of Theodore Sterling, a privileged young man accused of sexually assaulting a young Black woman. As jurors from different backgrounds clash over the evidence, tensions escalate between determined state prosecutor James Jones and veteran defense attorney Greg Sims.
The case takes a turn with the arrival of a mysterious “wildcard” witness who claims to know the truth about the night in question. Her connection to the accused raises unsettling questions of bias, credibility and justice. BLacklight and Dark Star Pictures are using the Aug.
27 release date to reimagine a theatrical rollout by pairing a screening in select markets with a moderated discussion featuring members of the cast and creative team, and in some cities, local community leaders, artists and cultural voices.
